If you are provided with a broad topic then you have the opportunity to think about different contexts and the come up with the idea that seems interesting to you. Choose something you enjoy, for example, writing about a particular novel, you have got the freedom to write about the character of your choice. Think about the characters you find interesting and start thinking about it, you will get many ideas that will make it easier for you. If it is a boring topic then use the approach that will allow you to get more pieces of evidence.

Keep in mind the type of your essay!

I have frequently seen the students asking how to write a good thesis paper or how to write a good thesis statement. It depends on you, the way you connect the things together, clarity in your statement and not only that… once you have formed it you need to align your body paragraphs according to it. You need to keep the things right from the beginning till the end.  Think about the type of your essay, is it informative or argumentative… then create your statements according to the requirements. Of course, an informative essay tends to provide the information whereas an argumentative needs to for an argument that would need the support from the different evidences.

Formulating a strong statement

How long should it be?

You need to present your ideas in one or two sentences. It should let you present your clear stance, like if you are supporting something then make it clear.

Where should I place it?

A thesis statement is presented in the introduction or if you are writing a lengthy essay then you can also place it in the second paragraph.

Avoid:

• Making lengthy thesis statement and placing it in the middle of the paragraph.
• Vague words and complex sentence structure as it affects the clarity
• The sentences like the focus of my paper is….

How to keep it specific?

Simply check:

• Have you used two large statements together and connected them with a conjunction?
• Have you used a subordinated conjunction for signalling a clear relationship?
• Are the two statements deviating the focus of the reader?

If you find these things then try to set a clear focus and formulate a proper statement.

Remember a good thesis might need some time….it is a kind of foundation of your essay so, give it proper time. It will be providing the direction to form your arguments, support them and make your position strong. Make the investment of your time here!
